A Note From Writer & Performer Eric Regimbald
Clowns are terribly misunderstood. Even by yours truly—until I became one.
To some, clowns symbolize coulrophobia—the fear of clowns. Coul is in the very name, a reminder of the mask they wear. And I get it: there's something unsettling about not knowing who—or what—is behind the mask. But then I look around. Kids dress up as Pennywise for Halloween, and if you flip through my photo album, you’ll find 10-year-old me grinning in a Freddy Krueger-glove-wearing clown hybrid costume. The fear is only the beginning. It gives way to curiosity. And curiosity asks: What is a real clown? Why do we need them? Who do they represent? This play poses these questions. The mask comes off, but I'll leave the answers to you...
At the Edmonton Fringe last year, I noticed an explosion of clown shows—wild, weird, and wonderful. It felt like the whole festival had been swept up in Clown Mania. In the streets, in the theatres—clowns everywhere. But not a phobia in sight. Without fear, there is room for joy. For mischief. For connection. This is a clown’s story—but don’t worry, it’s a human one too. Are they one and the same? Perhaps you'll find out. But there is oh so much more... As a clown, I’ve seen the peak of popularity and stumbled through the valleys of obscurity. What lives in the space between? How did I make it through?
